This article explains how to set the subject of an activity in Dynamics 365 using a template.
The process involves accessing the Document Name and Subject section and setting the subject pattern in your template. The resulting subject will be automatically set when creating and attaching a document based on the template to an activity.
Please note: If you only define a dynamic document name, the document name will be used for the subject too.
Example: We want the subject of activities to be Quote_[Name of the quote]_[Quotenumber].
Step 1: Access the Document Name and Subject section.
Navigate to Document Name and Subject via [Insert MailMerge Fields]->[Advanced Template settings]❶.

Step 2: Enable the set subject option and switch to the subject tab.
Check the Set document name and subject separate checkbox ❶. Switch to the subject tab ❷.
Step 3: Set your subject pattern.
Insert a placeholder for Dynamics 365 fields by double-clicking the element in the tree view or type in some fixed text enclosed by single quotes. The basic rules for the syntax of this property are:
- Dynamics 365 fields must be enclosed by << and >>.
- Fixed text must be enclosed by single quotes (‘).
- Fields and fixed text must be combined with a plus (+).
Details about the syntax for this property can be found here.

Step 4: Save your template.
Before you can use or test your template, you must save it.

When creating and attaching a document based on this template to an activity, you will see the subject of the newly created activity automatically set.
