How to migrate a SmartBar configuration

70 views 0 Updated on January 9, 2023

This article describes how the configuration of a specific SmartBar can be exported and imported. This functionality can be used to migrate the SmartBar configuration between different Dynamics 365 organizations.

Requirements:

  • The metadata (entities, entity views, web resources, icons, etc.) used by the SmartBar in the source system must identically exist on the target system (these items are not part of the config migration).
  • The entity name of the SmartBar area (for which the configuration should be migrated) must be the same on both the source and target organization.
  • SmartBar Version 2020.9 or higher (available here)

Step-by-step description

Step 1: Open your SmartBar and click on the ❶ settings wheel in the right top corner.

Step 2: The configuration opens. Open the ❶ “Global Settings”-tab. To export a specific “SmartBar”-area, navigate to the ❷ “Export and Import Area Configuration” and click the ❸ [Export]–button.

Step 3: This dialog opens. Use it to export the configuration of the current SmartBar area.

Step 4: Now open the ❶ [Import]-dialog in the target organization (Where you want to migrate your SmartBar) and ❷ paste the before exported configuration into the text area and hit ❸ [Import].

Please note: After the import, it is recommended to check if the configuration shows the expected buttons. Don´t forget to [Save Configuration] so that the imported configuration can take effect.
